Math Problem of the Week -February 3rd

on February 2, 2009

Please post an answer to this question. We will discuss it in class on Thursday. Be sure to show your work!!! I want to see your math and how you solved it.

“Four more laps”, Prince Carl thought as he was rowing in his boat. He stroked the oars 50 times per minute. During practice he timed himself and found out that it takes him 5 minutes to row each lap.” How many more times will Prince Carl stroke the oars before the end of the race?

Extra Mile: The 1st place trophy last year went to Prince Paul. He made it to the finish line in 40 minutes. Prince Carl wants to beat that time this year by reaching the finish line with a 25 % or 1/4 faster time. What is the time that Prince Carl wants to finish the race in?

  1. Sarina says:

    Math Question:

50×5=250. So prince Carl can stroke the oars 250 times in five minutes.

Extra Mile: He wants to finish the race in 20 minutes because I know that half of 40 is 20.

  2. sara says:

Hi Mrs. Spata the answer is 250. I got my aswer by 50 x 5. Then I multiply ox5 and got 0. Then I did 5×5 that eaquls 255 so the answer is 250. thats my answer

  3. anjali says:

I think the answer is 250 more times. I got the answer by doing 50×5=250. That is how I got my answer.

  4. Aiman says:

It would take him 20 more minutes because he has 4 more laps more to go and he said it takes him 5 minutes so 4×5=20 thats how I got my answer.

  5. Jessica says:

The answer would be 20. I got this by multipling5x4=20.

  6. becky says:

It will take Prince Carl 20 minutes to finish the race.I got my answer by multipling 5×4=20.Prince Carl will stroke the oars 1,000 times by the end of the race. I got my answer by multipling 50×20=1,000.
Extra mile: The time that Prince Carl wants to finish the race in 30 minutes.I got my answer by using my mind.If you take a 1/4 away from 40 minutes you get 30 minutes.

  7. zach b says:

    50×5=250, 250×4=1,000
Prince Carl will stroke the oars 1,000 more times.

Extra Mile: He wants to finish the race in 30 minutes. 1/4 of 40 is 10. 40-10=30

  8. Nikki says:

50×5=250 250×4=1,000 It takes him 50 rows each minute and get 250 so four more laps will equal 1,000.The answer is 1,000.

    extra mile
Half of 40 is 20. Half of 20 is 10. 1/4 is like shading 3 parts of a square if you split it in 4 and leave 1 part of it white. The answer is 10.

  9. Zachary G. says:

    5 min. for 1 lap
    4laps x5minutes = 20 minutes for 4 laps
    50 strokes x20 minutes = 1,000 strokes
Prince Carl will need to stroke 1,000 strokes before the end of the race.

    extra mile:
    40 minutes
    10×4= 40 minutes
    25% of 40 =10
    40-10=30minutes
30minutes is the time he has to get to be 25% faster.

  10. Christian says:

    50×5=250 strokes in one lap.
250×4 laps=1,000 strokes before the end of the race.

    Extra Mile
Price Carl wants to finish in 25 minutes because 1/4 faster time would be 15 minutes quicker
    40-15=25

  11. Anthony D says:

    Reviesed answer,

    50 rows per min x 20 min = 1,000

    4 more laps x 5 min =20

Price carl will need 1,000 more rows to complete the race.

  12. Jackie A. says:

    Dear Ms. Spata,
Price Carl would stroke 200 more times before the race ends.50×4=200.

extra mile…40-25=15.Prince Carl wants to finish the race in 15 minutes.

    your student,
    Jackie Avione

  13. AnthonyB says:

Prince Carl will have to stroke the oars 1000 more times for the last four laps.

    50 strokes per minute X 5 minutes = 250 strokes per lap.

250 strokes X 4 laps =1000 strokes to the end of the race.

  14. Taylor says:

Prince Carl will stroke the oars before the end of the race 250 times. I got my answer by doing 5×50=250 and doing the same thing 4 more times. Then I did 250×4=1,000

  15. nicholas says:

if prince carl strokes 50 times a minute and each lap = 5 minutes then you have to multiply 50 x 5 which = 250 strokes per lap he has four laps to go so, you have to multilpy 250 x 4 laps which = 1,000. the answer is 1,000 strokes before the end of the race.

  16. adonis says:

    50
    x 4
    200

  17. Peter says:

    50 250
    x 5 x 4
    ____ ____
    250 1000

To get my answer I did two equations. The first one was 50 x 5 because he stroked 50 times per minute and there were 5 minutes in each lap. It was 250. Then I did 250 x 4 because there were 4 more laps left and it took him 250 strokes to finish a lap. My answer is it will take him 1000 more strokes to finish.

    Extra Mile: 40/4 = 10 40-10=30

To get my answer I did two equations. The first one was 40 divided by 4 because Prince Paul finished in 40 minutes and Prince Carl wants to finish in 1/4 of that time and 1/4 can be represented as divided by 4. Then, since Prince Carl wants to take 1/4 off that time, I did 40 – 10 = 30. That is how I got my answer.

  18. Jacklyn Erickson says:

    50×5=250
    250×4=1,000

He will stroke the oars 1,000 more times before the end of the race,so the math problems will be 50×5=250, then all you have to do is multiply 250×4=1,000.

    40/4=10
He wants to beet Prince Paul by 10 minutes, so the math problem will be 40minutes divided by 4 witch equals 10minutes.
