A window into our classroom!

Colonial Day at Tackan

on March 7, 2012

Benner’s Farm visited us today to let the students learn about and experience life as a child in Colonial times.

We participated in several fun time-period activities such as writing with a quill, carding wool and spinning it into yarn, weaving, stenciling, and making a common colonial times toy.

Check out the picutres on the photo gallery page.

We also made and ate traditional “Journey cakes” or  “Johnny Cakes”.

They are yummy and easy to make.

2 cups ground cornmeal, 2 Tbsp butter, 5 tsp sugar, 1/2 tsp salt, and 2 cups boiling water (must be boiling!)

Mix all of the above ingredients together and milk to thin to pancake consistency. Fry until golden brown on both sides in a buttered skillet or one sprayed with “Pam”. Dip in syrup or honey and enjoy!
