Teacher Talk :O)

The week before Spring Break, we came to the end of our Social Studies unit of Exploration. In place of a unit test, we have been keeping all of our projects, assignments, and journal entries together as an “Explorer’s Portfolio”. It was due on Friday and it will be graded using a rubric that I shared with the class. They have been aware since the beginning of the unit of what my expectations were and what they needed to do in order to recieve a 4 out of 4.

I will be sending them home as soon as I can. It will take me a little while to read through all of them carefully and grade them.

Voki News

Unfortunately, I have some bad news about using the Voki.com website. As my student already know, I had to get the district to approve the use of Vokis for my blog (New technology…)After describing the educational plans I had for using them, they allowed the site access through our filter system on the computers.

A Voki can be created without making an account on the site. Without an account, you can not gain access to other parts of the Voki.com site. My plan was for NO accounts to be set up. Therefor, no information would be saved on their site about us. We would have access to what we needed, making a Voki, and that’s all.

In order to create an account you need to be 13 or older. Because of this stipulation (even though we were not creating accounts, or going elsewhere on the site), the district has decided that I should not be using the site with my students.

We did not start any projects yet. We spoke about them and were excited about them, but no one went onto the site yet.

Sorry for getting you all excited about the president project. We’ll find another thing to do on the blog besides making a Voki.

Black History Month

February is Black History month. In class we will be working on research projects that will teach us more about some very important black Americans and how they made an impacted on life as we know it. We will be presenting these to the class so that we can all learn from each other.

Here are a few links that you may want to check out for more Black History Facts.

President’s Day

Each student will be researching a president of the United States of America and creating a Voki respresenting him. They will then make a recording of that president’s accomplishments and publish their Voki on this blog.

Keep a look out for them on our new “Presidents” page. Look on the top of your screen for the link.

Math Problem of the Week -February 3rd

Please post an answer to this question. We will discuss it in class on Thursday. Be sure to show your work!!! I want to see your math and how you solved it.

“Four more laps”, Prince Carl thought as he was rowing in his boat. He stroked the oars 50 times per minute. During practice he timed himself and found out that it takes him 5 minutes to row each lap.” How many more times will Prince Carl stroke the oars before the end of the race?

Extra Mile: The 1st place trophy last year went to Prince Paul. He made it to the finish line in 40 minutes. Prince Carl wants to beat that time this year by reaching the finish line with a 25 % or 1/4 faster time. What is the time that Prince Carl wants to finish the race in?
