Mrs. Spata’s Fourth Grade Blog

What is a Voki?

Get a Voki now!

A Voki is an animated avatar that you can add audio to. What does that mean?! An avatar is an on-line representation of yourself. Instead of a picture like my smiley face at the bottom right of this page… you can completely customize your own “character”. Then you can record your voice and add it to the image bringing it to life.

I plan to use these to bring characters of stories we read “to life” as well as using them to connect with our Blogging Buddies.

Virtual Field Trip

I have just been contacted by the Digital Learning Network and have been told that our Virtual Field Trip scheduled for February 9th has been cancelled. We are in the process of trying to reschedule the trip, however we booked these last year because NASA’s schedule fills up really fast!! I will keep you informed of any good news if and when I hear it.

The good news is that we were scheduled for two trips this year… so at least we still get to participate in one. 🙂

We had computer lab and art today.  Also, Olivia did her booktalk.

Thursday– Anjali did her booktalk. We did a game for math. Mrs.Spata was out today so Mrs.Tedesco filled in for her. For our Social Studies unit, we are studying explorers. We asked each other questions from a sheet of paper. Each table 1 through 4, got a different saying.

Friday– Anthony D. did his booktalk. We had music after lunch and recess. When we did social studies, we painted the world the people from the 1400’s knew. We also had our Multiplication Marathon. Ms. Spata opened the Spata Store. Also Ms. Perelli bought us some brand new items for the store.

Math Problem of the Week (January 26th)

Please post an answer to this question. We will discuss it in class on Wednesday. Be sure to show your work!!! I want to see your math and how you solved it.

Your family is bringing hamburger buns to the family reunion. You need to bring enough buns for 76 hamburgers. The buns are sold in packages of 8. About how many packages should you buy? Explain your answer.

Extra Mile: Would it be cheeper to buy the buns at the supermarket (regular bag of 8 buns for $2.00)  or at Cosco (a bulk bag of 20 buns for $3.75)? Explain your answer.

Thank you

I would like to thank all of you for completing the “Quick Questionnaire” for me.

Beginning next week, I will be adding an on-line homework component to your child’s responsibilities. It is my plan, and I will try to stick to this when possible, to give 2 nights to complete “on-line” homework. This way you will have a little bit more time in order to allow your child access to the computer.

On-line homework will be either on my blog, on the math site, or on Study Island.

I agree with many of you who stated that your child is not permitted unsupervised on the internet. I can tell you that my blog is 100% secure. Nothing can be posted without my direct approval. Also, the district has made sure that both the math site and the  Study Island site are both secure. I will never assign anything that is not appropriate and safe for your child.

When reports are assigned and research is necessary, plenty of time is given so that internet searches can be done with a parent present.

Thank you so much for your support. I am always available if you have any questions or comments. :o)
